You are going to install and active Easy Table of Contents Plugin.
After activating the Plugin, you are going to visit settings in the table of contents page. This is the place you are going manage the general settings of the table of contents.
In settings you can enable or disable automatic insertion of the table in a post content, if the option is enabled, then the table of contents Plugin will automatically add a table of contents in a post that has more than a 4 headings. You can even change it to other numbers if you want, either more than four or less than four in heading for automatic insertion.
Normally, is not recommend to add a table of contents on all of your posts, except the are very long.
How to Properly insert Table of Contents in WordPress to my recommended posts?
After installing and activating the table of contents Plugin, move to settings and select it to have more than four heading before it automatically add table of contents in your post. Sometimes your posts will have more than four heading and still your post will not be long, so if you want you can off the automatic insertion of table of contents.
Doing so, you will only be able to add the table of contents when you are writing a post or editing a post. You can see the add table of contents below the post your are writing or editing, then you can tick the box to insert the table of contents in your post.
How to Create Table of Contents in WordPress
After you have decided how you will want to insert the table of contents in your post.
In settings of table of contents page, scroll down to change the how the table of contents will appears.
Adjust the height and width, you can even set a custom colour for your table of contents box.
After you setup the font size which is not necessary, you can move to advance settings.
In advance settings, the default options are ok, but you can still check to see if anything to change.
You should not forget to save those changes you just made.
Except you tick off the auto-insertion, the Plugin will start to automatically adding a table of contents to your posts, according to the settings you choose earlier.
You can manage the settings on each post.
In post edit on your screen, you will notice a section to manage the table of contents.
This section helps you to add table of contents in your posts after you have disable auto-insert, in settings.
You can also choose which type of heading to use in the table items.
Note: if you change those settings inside the post editor, it will override the main settings.
